Paperclay Sculpts

Here are two dolls I was working on just before I busted my leg. Just now I was able to hobble my butt around with the digital camera and snapped some pictures. Oh man how I miss making dolls! At any rate, the head on top was made using Hannie Sarris' tutorial. I really like how this one turned out. The left side of her face is a little too high, but I think I can still fix it. The look I was going for was about a eight to ten year-old girl with the prospect of having a really big nose (tee-hee). I have some soft brown Tibetan lamb's wool just waiting to make her wig. Her eyes are 12mm plastic eyes I ordered from Kemper Dolls. All I need to do now is sculpt some arms and legs. I intend on using a cloth body.

The little doll in the last picture is a prototype of one of my smaller dolls. She measures just under 8 inches. Her head is sculpted out of paperclay and then covered with cloth. I used colored pencils for her eyes, lips and cheeks. Her hair is made from black wefted mohair. Her dress is adapted from a 19th century pattern. This doll also features a cloth body with articulated arms and legs. She certainly represents my more whimsical and slightly dark side. Be sure to click on the pictures for a massive close-up.

I have just returned from my orthopedic doctor. They removed my cast and took some more x-rays. Dr. Prager decided I needed to wear a walking boot for four weeks. I was really hoping for two weeks, but my stupid ankle is still healing. Luckily, my boot can come off at night. That's wonderful. Now I can sleep better. So towards the end of April this chapter of my life can finally come to a conclusion.

Judi from Alaska suggested doing some sculpting. I couldn't agree more. I have a wonderful book I just purchased on its way. It is by the dutch artist Hannie Sarris. She uses Paperclay to sculpt the most beautiful dolls. I tried her tutorial, and I was amazed by the results. So I just had to get her book to learn even more. Before I broke my leg I sculpted some doll heads. I need to get some pictures up on my blog. So until then, happy dollmaking! Oh and check out my Etsy store for custom shop banners. Thanks!

An Update

Well, my leg is still broken. I wound up having a really bad allergic reaction to some medication. I still am not able to work on my dolls. However, I am working on store banners to sell on Etsy. I see my orthopedic doctor this Tuesday to get a new cast. Lastly, I still have a little over two weeks before I am completely healed up. I hope everyone else is doing well.
Happy Dollmaking!!!

Sometimes life stinks, but then again...

On February 24, there was a freak dust storm here in Texas. The sky was orange! My husband even took pictures of it. Also, our power was out all day as a result of the freak storm. Eventually, we went to my husband's business office so he could get some work done. Well, I had the bright idea to skate around the building while he worked. Just as I was returning back to his office, I fell. My leg made a real loud pop, and then that was it. I was on the floor and couldn't move. Eventually, we had to call an ambulance to get me off the floor and get some medical attention. To make a long story short, I fractured my ankle and fibula. The pain has been terrible. But luckily, I am getting a lot better. It has been two weeks and I feel the worst is behind me. In four weeks the cast will come off...thank God. The worst thing is I have not been able to work on anything, and I feel my pride will take much longer to heal.

The best part of this whole debacle is how wonderful my husband has been to me. I am so thankful for every little thing he does for me. Thank you, honey.
