Little Ornaments on Etsy

As mentioned in my previous post, I needed to take a break and make some primitive dolls. So I decided to make some little ornaments. I had a great time making them. They reflect my more cynical and whimsical side. In addition, they are available to purchase in my Etsy store.

This Doll Is Driving Me Bonkers!!!

You ever have that one doll that is a pain in the booty ever danged step of the way? Well, this doll is exactly that for me. She was originally intended to be something else, but that project fell by the wayside. So I decided I wanted to salvage her and make her into something different. This is what happens when you don't plan everything out in advance. I know I need to set her aside and focus on a new project, but I am afraid if I do that; she'll never be finished. Her hair is still fuzzy because it still needs to be sewn in a few places and therefore it hasn't been sprayed with some hairspray. I want to make her some sort of hat from the Middle Ages, but I can't decide which one to make (there are so many awesome hats and headdresses from that time period!). Oh God, don't even get me started on her feet! I could go and on.
I suppose I should make a couple of primitive dolls and just relax. It helps sometimes to unwind by making a doll from someone else's pattern.
Please feel free to comment on any of your unpleasant dollmaking experiences. Misery loves company.

Latest Work

This is my entry in the 2007 Angel Challenge. The pattern was provided by the extremely talented Sherry Goshon. The theme of the competition is What do we hope for 2007 to be or bring to our lives?
This is what I wrote for my entry:
The theme for my angel is “exultation and hope” in our marriage. My husband and I both sew. This angel, representing God’s presence in our lives together, will watch over us now and for the rest of our lives. The fabrics I used are a combination of my own personal stash and my husband's remnants; he makes vestments and uses more expensive fabrics than I do. The dark, sophisticated colors convey inner reflection, dreams, grace and beauty.
Using Sherry’s pattern, I made the arms and body. Next, I needlesculpted, gessoed and painted the angel’s face and hands. Then sewed them to her body. I drafted my angel a hat from the Middle Ages called a liripipe. The liripipe is lined with coordinating box pleats. The tail of the liripie is stuffed to give it shape. For the skirt I began with a lined black broadcloth underskirt and then finished with a burgundy overskirt. I used more of the body fabric to make a scapular and finished with matching burgundy satin ribbon. Her wings are made from foam and trimmed with burgundy ribbon using a whipstitch. Lastly, she is attached to a resin Romanesque candlestick.

I cannot wait to see the other entries for this competition. Good luck to the other entries!

I'd Rather Be Dollmaking

Well, I am stuck in my husband's office while he ran some errands. So while I am waiting for him to return, I decided to doodle. Then play around with Gimp. I am not too famaliar with Gimp, but it is almost exactly like Photoshop and it's free. But you have to work with the tools you have in front of you. At any rate, I have had Greek goddesses on the brain lately. Here is a sketch of a doll I'd like to do someday. Happy Dollmaking and I miss my sewing machine.
Mystery Avatar Revealed!
I have been very busy and sometimes a little frustrated working on some dolls for a couple of competitions. And as silly as it might sound, I don't want to reveal what I am working on until after the competition is over.
So in the meantime, I asked people to guess just who my avatar is. I have received some wonderful emails with guesses ranging from Naomi Watts to Christine Aguilera. But now I will show you who I chose to give the Coppermouse Makeover to.

My avatar is Marilyn Monroe ala Coppermouse. Don't you just love Photoshop!
